May Feature: Mr Bell’s Plough

Thought to have been used to plough the first furrow in Whanganui, Mr Bell’s swing plough (made in England prior to 1841) offers a glimpse into early European farming practices. Drawn by a bullock and requiring skill to operate, it was used to cultivate staple crops such as wheat and barley.

Its journey into the Museum collection has long been something of a mystery — one that has only recently begun to be better understood. Through this object, we can explore the different layers of history and how perspectives on the past continue to evolve.
