The Whanganui Regional Museum Archives contain a large and exciting collection of original and secondary information, available for private and professional research. The majority of the information held in the archives is directly relevant to the Whanganui region, although there is significant material of national and international interest.

The collection includes:

  • Manuscripts and archives
  • Maps and plans
  • Photographs and negatives
  • Newspapers and journals
  • Family and personal papers
  • Records of clubs, societies and institutions
  • Paintings, drawings and prints
  • Oral histories
  • Books

By appointment only, on weekday mornings except on public holidays.

Access to the Archives is free.

Fees are charged for all copies produced, for specialist research services and for reproductions in all formats of publication.

Copying charges:

  • Photocopying: 30 cents per A4 page and 50 cents per A3 page
  • Digital copies of photographs: $20 per A4 image
  • Consult the Archivist about pricing for other sizes and formats

Publication fees:

  • $20 per image (local history, educational)
  • $100 per image (commercial)
  • $100 per hour of filming

If researchers are unable to come to the Museum they can ask the Archivist to carry out research on their behalf.

Staff research time charges:

  • Free for the first half hour
  • $30 per half hour after that
