Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) 2026

Whanganui Regional Museum is delighted to invite kura to a new Term Three EOTC programme exploring the fascinating world of Aotearoa’s native bees; their diversity, their whakapapa within our ecosystems, and the vital role they play in sustaining the natural world around us.

Led by our Museum Education team, this hands-on learning experience combines guided museum tours with interactive, curriculum-linked activities.

Ka whai wāhi ai ngā ākonga – Student Experience:

  • A guided tour of the Museum, connecting bee life to wider ecological and cultural stories.
  • Interactive, hands-on learning activities exploring bee diversity, life cycles and habitats.
  • A creative art outcome, allowing students to express and reflect on their learning.
  • Discussion of the essential role pollinators play in healthy ecosystems, and practical ways we can help protect them

He Hononga Marautanga – Curriculum Connections:

This programme has been developed to align with the New Zealand Curriculum, supporting learning across:

  • Science: living world, ecosystems and biodiversity
  • Sustainability: environmental awareness and kaitiakitanga
  • Art: creative expression and visual response
  • Mātauranga Māori: traditional and contemporary Māori knowledge and perspectives on the natural world

Programme Details:

  • Session Times: 9.30am–11.00am or 1.00pm–2.30pm
  • Curriculum Levels: Early Childhood Education through to Secondary, with content differentiated to suit year-level needs

Term 4: Typography in Motion — 2026 Festival of Design

Where ink meets innovation – explore how the spaces between words shape our interpretation.

Whanganui Regional Museum invites schools from across the Whanganui District to celebrate Typography in Motion, an EOTC programme inspired by the Festival of Design 2026.

Ka Whai Wāhi Ai Ngā Ākonga – Student Experience:

Led by museum education staff, this hands-on learning experience combines knowledge of historical printmaking, principals of design and contemporary installation ideas. Students will use WRM’s historic printing press to compose original type arrangements, pull large collaborative prints and contribute to three collaborative typography installations focused on protest and poetry.

Term 4: Rūaumoko – Restless Land

Explore the forces that shape Aotearoa through our Rūaumoko: Restless Land education programme, inspired by the touring exhibition developed by Te Papa Tongarewa and Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tū Ake.

Rūaumoko - Restless Land

Journey into the realm of Rūaumoko, the atua associated with earthquakes and volcanic activity and the youngest child of Ranginui and Papatūānuku. Through mātauranga Māori and science, students will explore the living and changing nature of the whenua beneath our feet.

This hands-on programme investigates the forces that shape Aotearoa, including earthquakes, volcanoes, tectonic movement, floods, and other natural hazards. Through interactive activities, geological specimens, models, and practical challenges, students will discover how and why our whenua is constantly changing.

Ka whai wāhi ai ngā ākonga – Student Experience:

Students will also consider how we live alongside these natural forces and how knowledge, preparation, and resilience can help us respond to natural events. The programme encourages learners to build a deeper connection with the whenua while thinking about how we can prepare for and adapt to an ever-changing environment.

Self-guided exploration of the museum. Ākonga can use our Museum Explorers resources in pairs or groups to discover fascinating treasures and learn at their own pace.

This is a self-guided activity, available anytime during normal Museum opening hours. Bookings are not required however we do recommend you make contact with us to prior to your visit, so we can ensure your experience is optimal. Email education@wrm.org.nz.
