Coastal development and the conservation of kororā (little penguin)
Dr John Cockrem, Professor Emeritus, Massey University, and Director, Kororā Ornithology Ltd
Kororā (little penguins) are declining and have disappeared from many locations around New Zealand’s coasts. Major threats include human activities both on the coast and at sea. In this talk, Dr Cockrem will explore how conservation efforts can support kororā by engaging with coastal construction projects, while also challenging proposalas that could have large-scale adverse effects on these and other seabirds. This talk is a contribution to the Department of Conversation’s annual Conservation Week.
Nature Talks is a series of bi-monthly talks offered by three local environmental groups—Birds New Zealand (Whanganui Region), the Whanganui branch of Forest & Bird, and the Wanganui Botanical Group—in conjunction with the Whanganui Regional Museum. The topics all relate to New Zealand’s environment, natural history and conservation. The talks are typically held on the third Tuesday of every second month.
Entrance is free, although to help cover costs, a koha is always appreciated from those who can afford it.
