Discover the powerful natural forces that have shaped Aotearoa New Zealand in this interactive touring exhibition from Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Combining mātauranga Māori with scientific understanding, Rūaumoko – Restless Land explores the world of Rūaumoko, the atua of volcanoes and earthquakes, and the youngest child of Ranginui and Papatūānuku. Through hands-on activities, tectonic plate models, volcanic rock samples, a shake table and engaging multimedia displays, visitors can learn how earthquakes and volcanoes occur, why they are such an important part of New Zealand’s landscape, and how they continue to influence our lives today.

The exhibition invites visitors of all ages to discover the stories of Rūaumoko while gaining a deeper understanding of the science behind volcanic activity and earthquakes. As the journey unfolds, visitors are encouraged to think about natural hazards in their own communities and learn practical ways to be better prepared for future events.
