Whanganui Regional Museum is thrilled to host National Library’s replica voyaging waka hourua Whakaura, a unique education resource, in celebration of Puanga/Matariki.

Set sail on a journey of discovery these school holidays with our unique hands-on programme at Whanganui Regional Museum.

Explore the rich traditions of waka, navigation, food gathering, and creativity. Learn how Whakaura was designed, built, and navigated across the ocean. Discover the differences between waka used for warfare and river travel, and find out why Te Tau o Puanga is an important time for harvesting kai. Then, put your creativity to work by creating a symbolic screen print inspired by either Te Tau o Puanga or Whakaura.

Book a single session and enjoy four activities in one fun and interactive experience. Perfect for ages 6-16.

Materials are provided. Please wear or bring old clothes for screen printing.
Meet in the atrium at Whanganui Regional Museum.
