World-renowned Stonehenge expert to speak at Museum

Leading British archaeologist and broadcaster will visit Whanganui.

Whanganui Regional Museum will host a special public talk on one of the world’s most iconic ancient monuments when archaeologist and broadcaster Julian Richards presents Stonehenge – Old Rocks, New Theories.

Stonehenge has fascinated scholars and the public for centuries, prompting enduring questions about how it was built, who built it, and why. In this illustrated talk, Julian Richards will draw on more than 40 years of personal involvement with Stonehenge to explore recent discoveries and emerging theories that are reshaping our understanding of this most famous stone circle.

Julian Richards is a leading British archaeologist. He has directed major research projects at Stonehenge and across prehistoric Britain and is well known for his work translating complex archaeological research for public audiences through books, documentaries, and broadcasts.

The visit has been arranged by Maeve Egan, Kaihāpai Taonga/Curator, Social and Natural History at Whanganui Regional Museum. Maeve has previously worked with Richards while developing her exhibition Tools Through Time.

‘Julian generously shared his expertise when I was identifying several objects for Tools Through Time, and his insight was invaluable,’ says Egan. ‘It’s a real privilege to welcome him back to Whanganui and to offer our community the chance to hear directly from someone who has helped develop our understanding of Stonehenge today.’

The talk will include time for audience questions and is expected to appeal to anyone with an interest in archaeology, ancient history, or one of the world’s most enduring mysteries.

Stonehenge – Old Rocks, New Theories will take place in the Davis Lecture Theatre at Whanganui Regional Museum. Spaces are limited – registrations are required to secure a seat.
