Notice of Proposed Repatriation of Traditional Bird Spears

E whakamahere ana mātou ki te whakahoki i ētahi here manu Māori tuku iho (here) mai i tō mātou kohinga ki te iwi o Ngā Ariki Kaipūtahi i Tūranganui-a-Kiwa. E mōhiotia ana he taonga nō te rohe o Tairāwhiti ēnei, ā, ka tiakina e te Tairāwhiti Museum mō te iwi o Ngā Ariki Kaipūtahi.

E tautoko ana tō mātou poari kaitiaki (arā te Kaunihera Tahi) me te Tikanga Māori House i tēnei whakahokinga ki tō rātou ake kāinga taketake. E ai ki tā mātou Kaupapa Here Whakahokinga Taonga, e whakaputaina ana tēnei pānui hei tono whakaaro ki te marea.

We intend to repatriate a number of traditional Māori bird spears (here) from our collection to Gisborne iwi Ngā Ariki Kaipūtahi. These taonga have confirmed provenance related to the Tairāwhiti region, and it is intended that they will be in the care of Tairāwhiti Museum on behalf of Ngā Ariki Kaipūtahi.

Our board of trustees (Joint Council) and the Tikanga Māori House endorse this repatriation to their place of origin. In keeping with our current Repatriation Policy, this notice is being published to invite public feedback.
