Restoring native species to sanctuaries in Āotearoa New Zealand: the case of Tarapuruhi Bushy Park
Doug Armstrong, Emeritus Professor of Conservation Biology, Massey University Oceania Chair, IUCN-SSC Conservation Translocation Specialist Group New Zealand Frog Recovery Group
Efforts to conserve biodiversity in Āotearoa New Zealand include establishing and expanding a network of wildlife sanctuaries. For greatest effect, these need to be managed not only individually but as part of a network of sites, with periodic exchanges of both species and ideas among them. In this contribution to DOC’s Conservation Week (1st –7th September), Professor Armstrong will discuss some of the achievements and challenges of this work, using Tarapuruhi Bushy Park as an example.
Nature Talks is a series of bi-monthly talks offered by three local environmental groups—Birds New Zealand (Whanganui Region), the Whanganui branch of Forest & Bird, and the Wanganui Botanical Group—in conjunction with the Whanganui Regional Museum. The topics all relate to New Zealand’s environment, natural history and conservation. The talks are typically held on the third Tuesday of every second month.
Entrance is free, although to help cover costs, a koha is always appreciated from those who can afford it.
Please use the back entrance to the Museum, from the rear car park. The Watt Street entrance is temporarily closed for refurbishment.
