⏰ 1.0 FTE (Full-time) | This is a fixed-term position until 31 December 2026, with the expectation that the role will be reviewed for permanency.

We’re seeking a passionate Kaiwhakaako Māori to join our Museum Education team and deliver engaging, place-based learning experiences grounded in Te Ao Māori.

This role works alongside the Pou Mātauranga / Lead Educator to deliver our Ministry of Education Enriching Local Curriculum (ELC) programmes to schools and preschools, while supporting wider Museum education initiatives.

Whanganui Regional Museum is one of Aotearoa’s oldest regional museums, caring for nationally significant collections including important taonga Māori and an outstanding social and natural history collection. Grounded in Te Tiriti o Waitangi and strong relationships with iwi and hapū, we connect our community with the rich stories and heritage of Whanganui.


About the Role

You will:

  • Co-design and deliver high-quality learning programmes for schools and preschools
  • Create engaging, hands-on museum experiences for ākonga from preschool to tertiary
  • Deliver learning confidently in te reo Māori
  • Build strong relationships (whanaungatanga) with local kaiako and the wider Whanganui community
  • Support wider Museum programmes and visitor experiences as needed

About You

You will have:

  • Fluency in te reo Māori and confidence delivering education in te reo
  • Recent experience delivering face-to-face learning for tamariki and rangatahi
  • Strong programme design skills and the ability to engage diverse learners
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office and everyday digital tools
  • A strong whakapapa connection to Whanganui
  • A genuine commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, honouring partnership, equity and respect for tangata whenua
  • Experience in the heritage, arts, GLAM, or education sector is desirable. A teaching qualification is an advantage.

  • Energetic and hands-on
  • Willing to work occasional weekends or evenings
