The March feature in Ko te Kākahu o te Marama/Outfit of the Month is a finely crafted cream cotton muslin dress dating from the 1910s.

With its scalloped-edge embroidered collar, crochet-ball false buttons, floral and leaf motifs, lace inserts, and delicate horizontal tucks, the dress reflects the light, decorative styles popular for informal occasions at that time.

The garment was owned by Mrs Annie Randal of ‘Titchfield’ (later Holly Lodge) at Papaiti, Whanganui. It forms part of a significant donation of 88 objects and photographs relating to her life, gifted to the Museum in 1985. The Museum holds an extensive collection of Annie Randal’s clothing, offering rich insight into personal style and social history in Whanganui in the early twentieth century.

Kaihāpai Taonga/Curator, Fashion and Textiles, Stephanie Wood, will present a short talk exploring the craftsmanship, context, and stories connected to this elegant piece.

Everyone is welcome. No need to book. Admission is free. Koha for the Museum is always appreciated. The dress will remain on display throughout March.
