Pakimaero: Kōrero From the Past

ECE – Year 13

Pakimaero are stories passed down through generations to support learning about history and traditions. Ākonga will enjoy listening to and participating in these stories, including how the river was formed, the story of Tutaeporoporo, and more.

ECE – Year 13

Māori Court

Ākonga will learn about the origins of Whanganui from the perspectives of mana whenua and tangata tiriti. They will explore the role of religion and spirituality in the establishment of the town, including a closer look at the architecture and design of sacred spaces such as local marae and churches.

Wahine Toa: Voices That Shaped Whanganui

ECE – Year 13

Explore Whanganui’s proud suffragist history and the mana wāhine and wāhine Pākehā who worked to secure women’s rights. Their courage and determination not only paved the way for the rights of wāhine today but also helped create a fairer society, giving everyone a stronger voice and the chance to participate equally in their community.

Te Awa Tupua: Our Living River

ECE – Year 13

Ko au te awa, ko te awa ko au. – I am the river, and the river is me. Ākonga investigate relationships with Te Awa Tupua, the Whanganui River, from the past to the present, and discuss how we can uphold the health and wellbeing of our river.
